What is MyTrauma.org ? (still being developed please be patient)
That is a simple question answered. This is a well defined site that is for people and family members that have suffered TBI/ABI(Traumatic/Acquired Brain Injury) personally or a family member suffering from TBI/ABI. I designed this site in hopes that it will cut out all the unnecessary data and gets to the bottom line. I am an ABI survivor myself and thought it necessary to help as much as I can so people like myself do not have to go through the struggle of finding out the reasons why, how and what do I do next.
I suffered my ABI on August 26th 2001. I suffered a cerebral malformation (AVM) in my left temporal lobe. It left me permanently brain damaged with allot of after affects. I was left partially blind, short term memory loss, seizures, comprehension difficulties, word finding and other difficulties after this bleed. I had brain surgery (craniotomy) 3 days after my initial bleed to surgically remove the AVM. I spent 7 days in ICU at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester Minnesota. When I was discharged I was still trying to figure out just what happened to me and why!
I spent many months trying to find out as much information as I could about AVM's and other neurological disorders. I was completely un aware of the difficulties that I was being faced with and my new challenges. Not having the ability to read when I returned from the hospital made it that much more difficult. I would sit on the couch for hours trying to read just one paragraph from a magazine. I felt ashamed and humiliated when I was asked by my oldest daughter to read a children's book for her. That experience gave me hope and the words that came out of her mouth I will never forget as long as I live. She said "Don't worry Daddy, you will get better".
Those where powerful words coming from a 7 year old child. At the time I didn't realize exactly how powerful those words would become. After 6 years of set backs, difficulties, new detours in life I finally realize the power this 7 year old daughter of mine gave to me.
